Live Performances - and other news

Retreated to St Ives to take part in a weekend creative writing workshop led by FictionFire's Lorna Fergusson (17-20 April 2015).  Three days wrapped up in an artist's studio overlooking Porthgwidden beach discussing writers, screenwriters, story shapes and structures: bliss!

I can't recommend this event highly enough. Apart from being a successful published author herself, Lorna is a talented workshop leader.  She balances beautifully the benefits everyone has to gain from a fun and lively group dynamic, with being attentive to each individual's needs as well. Particularly impressive is her penchant for blending a cosy workshop style with hard academic rigour; not surprising perhaps given this woman lectures for Oxford University's Summer Programme.

If ever you have the opportunity to attend one of Lorna's workshops, grab it with both hands!

Performing with Ad Hoc Poets at Caversham Library on 14 May 2015 (7.30pm).

An evening of seasonal poetry on the subject of "Renewal" - whether finding unexpected aspects of yourself or others, triumphing over difficulties, discovering new pleasures in old pastimes, or simply celebrating the end of winter.

Performed with Ad Hoc Poets at Caversham Library, an evening of "Mulled Wine and Rhyme", designed to lift the spirits of flagging Christmas Shoppers, Friday 12 December 2014.

Guest Performer at Oxford Arts Group's Summer Park Live! event, 3 August 2014 - a mouthwatering picnic spread of music, dance and spoken word in the open air (in beautiful sunshine as it turned out) in Oxford's University Parks. Poetry gigging has never been this chilled...

Guest Reader at Oxford Arts Group's ConVerse sessions, introducing workshop audiences to Simon Armitage (20 February 2014) and Stevie Smith (14 May 2014).

Special guest of Anjan Saha's London Literature Lounge at Keats House Museum 22 March 2013
Performance: Waiting for Spring.

Fun night performing at Reading's Alternative Queens charity fundraiser on International Women's Day with guitarist Sanya Ozic as The Poetry Dojo.  Never thought I'd be performing poetry on the same bill as X-Factor famous Danyl Johnson!

A year of new challenges...

Over the Summer I was invited to be poetry installation, in amongst the sculptures at Asthall Manor Oxford, as part of the 2012 On Form Exhibition.

I was also invited on to London's South Bank art radio station Resonance FM to talk about poetry and to read some poems of my own.

Earlier this year I enjoyed a series of four live performances in one week, in London, Caversham, Henley and Oxford.  Phew!

The first was a reading at the Caversham Arts Trail, 22 May 2012, a nice relaxed event in the garden of fellow poet Robin Thomas.

The second was at Covent Garden's Poetry Cafe on 23 May, home of The Poetry Society.  Session hosted by London Literature Lounge and the very wonderful Anjan Saha (currently a Visiting Writer at Keats House).

The third at Artspace in Henley on 24 May 2012, as part of the Free Range Poets of Barn Galleries. This event formed part of Oxfordshire Arts Week...
...and the fourth at Oxford Open Artists at the Jam Factory, Saturday 26 May 2012.  An event orgnaised by the Oxford Arts Group to launch their new Albion Babel Anthology. Again, part of Oxfordshire Arts Week.

Took time out Autumn and Winter 2011/12 to complete an endearing little story for children:  Ziggy the Pickle Dog.  If you like a copy of the first story - Ziggy and the Delicious Cake - complete with beautiful illustrations by the very talented Nina Krauzewicz, then please leave a comment on the page dedicated to Ziggy.

29 September 2011 Performed at the Henley Literary Festival as part of the Free Range Poets of Barn Galleries: An evening of 'Poetry and Prosecco' at Le Parisien, Bell Street, Henley.

Performed at the Om Shan Tea House, San Francisco, 16 August 2011: first outing for a poem about City greed and the UK riots which kicked off just as I left for California.  It's called My Cup of Tea, which I thought highly appropriate for a gig in a tea house (LOL).

Profiled as a featured poet Summer 2011 at Poetry Space. (The wonderful illustrations are by Azzi Kalili)

Enjoyed performing with the New Libertines again on 13 June at Oxfringe.  Love the venue: Albion Beatnik Bookstore, Walton Street.

Performed as a New Libertine at Stoke Newington Literary Festival on 4 June.
Sell out crowd.  No really!  People had to be turned away!  Yes, you heard that right: turned away from a poetry event!!

Had fun performing at The Guardian Hay Festival, Open Mic on 30 May 2011.

7 May 2011 - performed Easter Song at The Caversham Arts Trail and met some excellent local poets I hadn't come across before: Wendy Klein, Robin Thomas and Victoria Pugh.

Performed at  Cookham Festival, 16 May, with the Free Range Poets.

Date for Oxfringe gig announced: 13 June 2011, at the Albion Beatnik bookshop in Jericho.  Curated by eight cuts writing collective, this forms part of their New Libertines 2011 Tour, of which it appears I am now part.

21 April 2011 - performed at London Literature Lounge at Covent Garden's Poetry Cafe (home of the National Poetry Society), marking the launch of the new online version of Trespass magazine.  Fantastic line-up!

Particularly impressive were radio favourite Mario Petrucci
and award-winning author Nicholas Hogg reading extracts from his forthcoming novel The Hummingbird and the Bear. Great stuff!

15 April 2011 - performed snippets from The Silver Collection at Reading's Poet's Cafeat 21 South Street Arts Centre:  Snarl, Harsh Words and The Beckoning Sea

11 April - Two poems from 'Take Time' selected for Poetry Space's April Showcase:  Mistaken Identity and Future Perfect.  Latter also selected for Poetry Space's Best of 2011 Anthology. Thanks Sue and Az!

26 March 2011 - Asked to write and perform a poem for a friend's 40th birthday party.  She used to look after our three children, so I have written about the warmth she brought to our family.  It's called Sunshine.

18 March 2011 - Performed at Reading Poet's Cafe, compared by the inimitable AF Harrold.  Performed short set: Take Time

Met some wonderful new poet friends
and invited to join local group Thin Raft.

10 March 2011 - So enjoyed performing Take Time at Oxford's 03 Gallery (part of Oxford's International Women's Festival).

Met some great people there - new poets to follow.
I'll post some of their work on My Favourite Poets page shortly so you can see....

20 Jan 2011 - First Ever Live Poetry Performance and Now I've Got the Bug! London Literary Lounge event on 20 Jan at Covent Garden's Poetry Cafe was excellent night! Met some great people and learned a lot from other poets' performances. See YouTube video.

Jan2011  - Beckoning Sea published in Poetry Space's best of 2010 print anthology, 'Collage', one of the commended poems in the Poetry Space competition.

Available to buy from Poetry Space's online bookshop.

26 November 2010 - Loved Poetry Space's Winter Workshop - The Poetry Cafe, Covent Garden.   Having agonised over the difference between song lyrics and 'true poetry', learned from Poetry Space's Azadeh K Taj that in her native Farsi the words for 'song' and for 'poem' are one and the same.

Have now reworked 'The Deep' so it is even more of a song.  Also added new 'Songs' section to this blog.
